If you are wondering how to prepare for a holiday mini session, the good news is that you do not need an elaborate plan. A little preparation goes a long way.
Holiday mini photography sessions are different from full family sessions because they are usually around 30 minutes long. They often take place inside beautifully styled studios, with the set, furniture and seasonal details already in place.
That shorter format is part of what makes holiday minis so fun. You get to step into a warm, curated space for half an hour and simply enjoy being together.
If you are trying to figure out how to prepare for a holiday mini session, think less about creating a perfect photo and more about arriving comfortable, rested and ready to enjoy the experience.

What Is a Holiday Mini Photography Session?
Think of a holiday mini session as borrowing a beautiful little home for 30 minutes and making it feel like yours.

Many photography studios create seasonal sets each year. Here in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, there are plenty of indoor studio spaces offering holiday setups in different styles.
Some rooms have deeper colours, tartan patterns and classic holiday styling. Others are neutral and timeless. You may also find bright, soft spaces filled with whites and lighter textures.

Once we are inside, you might cuddle together on a couch, read with your child, dance to holiday music or let your little one explore.

You do not need to spend the entire session smiling directly at the camera. In fact, some of my favourite photographs happen when everyone forgets about the camera for a moment.
How to Prepare for a Holiday Mini Session With Intention
One of the best ways to prepare is to think about what you would love these photographs to remind you of.
Maybe it is your baby’s first holiday season.

Perhaps your daughter is in a stage where she wants to dance everywhere she goes. Maybe your child is curious about absolutely everything.

Or perhaps you and your partner simply want photographs of who you are together right now.
You do not need a complicated vision. Sometimes the intention can simply be, I want to remember us like this. That is enough.
Your photographs can later become holiday cards, framed prints around your home or images you bring out every December. Most importantly, they become part of your family’s history.

Plan Your Holiday Photo Outfits Ahead of Time
Wardrobe is one of the biggest parts of how to prepare for a holiday mini session. What you wear becomes part of the photograph. Thoughtful coordination can help the final gallery feel cohesive without everyone needing to match.
Start by looking at the studio setup before choosing your outfits. A darker, Ralph Lauren-inspired holiday set might work beautifully with cream, camel, forest green, navy, burgundy, brown or textured knits.

For a neutral holiday set, consider soft whites, oatmeal, beige, brown, muted greens or other warm neutrals.

A brighter white studio can work beautifully with lighter fabrics, soft textures and subtle colours.

Most importantly, choose clothing you actually feel comfortable wearing. If something already feels uncomfortable at home, you probably will not want to spend your session adjusting it.
Bring Clean Indoor Shoes or Socks
Many holiday mini sessions take place inside shared photography studios. We may be photographing on a couch, rug or bed. Because of that, I recommend bringing clean indoor shoes or socks that you are happy to have photographed.

It is a small detail, but it helps keep the space clean and makes sure your full outfit still feels intentional.
Bring Something That Feels Like Your Family
If you are thinking about how to prepare for a holiday mini session with children, familiar items can help. Most holiday studios already have props, toys, books or decorative pieces available. Still, you are always welcome to bring something personal.

A favourite teddy bear, meaningful ornament, small toy or book you always read together can make the photographs feel much more like your family. For children, familiar items can also make a new studio feel less intimidating.

Sometimes the best photographs happen while you are simply reading together or watching your child play with something they love.
Choose the Best Time of Day for Your Child
Timing can make a big difference when preparing for a family holiday mini session. Consider when your child is usually happiest.

Are mornings their best time?
Do they need an afternoon nap before they are ready to engage again?
Do evenings tend to be harder?
Whenever possible, choose your session time around your child’s natural rhythm. The same applies to the adults.
Make sure everyone has eaten. Drink some water. Give yourself enough time to get ready. When everyone feels comfortable physically, it is much easier to settle into the session.
Give Yourself Extra Travel Time
Another important part of how to prepare for a holiday mini session is planning your arrival. Give yourself more travel time than you think you need.
Holiday traffic, parking and unfamiliar studio locations can all add a little extra time to your trip. If you are travelling to a session in Toronto or elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area, checking your route and parking options beforehand can make the day feel much calmer.

The goal is not perfection. It is simply to avoid walking into the studio already feeling rushed. If possible, try not to schedule too many activities on the same day. Children can become overstimulated when there is too much happening. Adults can too.
Making the photography session the main event for that part of your day gives everyone a little more room to enjoy it.
You Do Not Need to Start Posing Immediately
When you arrive at your session, I am not expecting everyone to immediately drop their bags and smile at the camera. Your 30 minutes are yours. If someone needs a moment to fix their hair, have some water or look around the studio first, that is completely okay.

We can put on some holiday music, get comfortable in the room and start naturally. Some children are ready to explore immediately. Others need a little time before they feel comfortable in a new place.
Both are completely normal.
Do Not Worry About Making Your Child Smile
One of the most common concerns parents have before family photos is whether their child will smile. They do not need to.
Instead, think about what makes your child feel content. Maybe they love being held. Maybe they want to read a book. Perhaps they want to jump, dance or explore.

I would much rather photograph genuine curiosity or laughter than spend your holiday mini session trying to manufacture a smile. The quieter expressions matter too.

Curiosity matters. Concentration matters. Shyness matters.
And yes, the sudden toddler zoomies matter too. Those are all part of your child’s story.

Let the Unexpected Moments Happen
Learning how to prepare for a holiday mini session is helpful, but there also comes a point where you have to let the session unfold.
My photography style is naturally documentary. I will always give you direction when you need it. However, I am also watching closely for the little moments happening between the poses.

It might be the way your child looks at you. It could be the moment you make eye contact with your partner and both start laughing.
Maybe your toddler suddenly takes off across the studio. Those small, unexpected moments are often the photographs that feel the most meaningful later.
Your holiday mini session is a collaboration. I bring the direction, observation and photography. You bring your relationships, personalities, traditions and everything that makes your family yours.
Is a 30-Minute Holiday Mini Session Long Enough?
For many families, 30 minutes is the perfect amount of time. Young children may arrive excited and engaged, then lose interest after 20 or 30 minutes. In those cases, a mini session can be ideal.

However, some children need more time to warm up. If your child typically needs a slower introduction to new people or new environments, a full one-hour photography session may feel better for your family.

The same can be true for couples who want more variety, more locations or more time to settle into being photographed. There is no right answer. You know yourself and your family best.
How to Prepare for a Holiday Mini Session: A Simple Checklist
If you are still wondering how to prepare for a holiday mini session, keep it simple.
Before heading to your session, I recommend:
- Choosing everyone’s outfits ahead of time
- Making sure each person feels comfortable in what they are wearing
- Bringing clean indoor shoes or photograph-friendly socks
- Packing a favourite toy, book or comfort item if your child would enjoy having it
- Making sure everyone has eaten
- Planning your route ahead of time
- Giving yourself extra travel time
- Choosing a session time that works well with naps and energy levels
- Avoiding an overly packed schedule that day when possible
- Thinking about one or two moments you would especially love to remember
After that, let the rest unfold naturally.

Your Holiday Photos Do Not Need to Be Perfect
Knowing how to prepare for a holiday mini session can help you feel more comfortable, but preparation is only one piece of the experience.
Holiday mini sessions move quickly. Thirty minutes can somehow feel like fifteen once we start. That is why I do not want you to spend the entire session worrying about creating the perfect family photograph.

Instead, think of it as time set aside to notice what is already there. The way your family fits together right now. The expressions your child makes at this age.

The way you and your partner laugh together. The little details that will eventually change. That is what I want you to be able to come back to years from now.
